For this video installation theory assignment I will be explaining the techniques ad intentions of a range of video artists and the production company's work that I like.
So in this blog post I have to include these things to get the grade that I want and I'm aiming for a merit so I have make sure that I explain it properly and use the correct terminology.
I need to include these things:
- Explain different video artists/production company's work as well as their intentions and techniques used in their work.
- My opinion about how they approach their work from a technical point of view (software and hardware used) I need to also do a comparison between other artists and companies.
- My thoughts on their content and compare it with existing reviews of work.
Without looking at that many video artist there is one particular artist that captured my attention and her work was the first one that I saw. There is one by Sonia Falcone - Santa Cruz Biennale and I thought that video installation art was absolutely beautiful, I loved all the colour and her work really interest me because she expresses her creativity through the use of colours.
You can see her video here:
I really really like this video she made I thought the art and the idea and everything about it was well put together making this the best video installation I have ever seen. It's just my type of video installation art like I really like it.
The video installation art shows all the colours and from light blue to tones of blue which looked awesome. When you watch this video you'll notice the mirrors that make it look as if it's moving away or getting smaller on the floor. She used all the colours perfectly the colours fading in the blue tone, then vibrant colours it just works!
When the colours started to get smaller; it looked like a puzzle piece to me just by the shape and with the different tones of colours that she used it looked really good. I like when the colours started to change by getting smaller and then it turned to small squares which then formed in to a bar. This was to me really cool and it's the first time I come across a video installation art that's like this.
This effects looks really good with using mirrors in like black because when you get the squares on them with different colours it'll work better, this will look effective and only the people who watch this will look at the colours not whats behind it which is clever because it's the colours that captured people attention. I like how after the small squares moved and got smaller it changed to the bright sparkling effect. I thought this gave the video installation art a concert feel like if you look at Katy perry concert and other popular singers concerts you'll see what i mean but this was better because people focused on the art so they weren't distracted by anything else.
This reminded me by just watching the video it got excited like a kid who has been to a concert the first time or something like the idea got me hyped I wish I could do something like that because it was so amazing. I love how all the colours on the video kinda looked like a mood changer it goes from calm to just colours popping everywhere. lol
In the video you see all the different colours moving like green, purple, yellow, red to orange it looked cool.
I like when the colours started to flash dark tones then change to more calmer light colours I think she definitely chose the right tones of colours in the right order going from calm, crazy to calm again etc. The visual effect of this is really good with the different variety of colours that was used it really made this different and just cool.
I like how the artist made it look like as if the bars of colours were moving, it like reminded me of when I go on my music on the computer and you have these music bars pop up and move with the music.
It a really interesting video installation, I like the whole idea the bar of college, the tones of colours that was used and I could tell that a lot of effort and creativity was put into this.
How it was made?
It was made by Sonia Falcone, she used a dark room and then used a lot of mirrors
as you can tell by the screenshots above. She used mirrors on both
sides of the walls and on below the floor on a long thin screen. She
used slices of mirrors and put them in a line she used different sized
ones I think. Also the program that she used for her video installation art was a 3D colour projection which is also a method of 3D video mapping, she created her art into a 3 dimension to 2 dimension which she used to change the colours of her work and to make her work look like it moved.
She projected her work to across 6 meter thin mirror slices, then she used a 3D mapping program which she controlled on the computer to make these different colours, patterns, bars, squares etc. She made this into a 3D dimension by using 3D mapping program to make the colours move. The light from the projection she positioned onto the object then made it reflect to the surface which was then picked up by the sensor which then got programmed into the mapping program.

A little bit about her:
Sonia Falcone likes to express herself with shapes, structures, colours and by looking at her video mapping work, you can tell that she loves colours and really has a passion for art. Her work definitely inspires me normally I don't like too many things in art or in a show like I just think it's too much. She did show that it can be fun which makes me want to just get lots of colours and make something out of it. Sonia herself says by using shapes and different colours it makes something look alive and I totally agree with her.
How does it influence my ideas?
Well I like all the different shapes and the colours that she used, it goes really nicely together. I would like to do something similar using lots of different colours but I don't think I'd use what she used like different shapes and the mirrors. I would like to maybe project it into a wall or a building and make something out it like make it look cool.
I do think like i see myself doing this type or art or something like this video mapping if it relates to music if it was in a concert for example or a live event. I just think it would suit more for these types of events. I like going to concerts that are colourful or something like that. If I did do this I think I would use lots of colours but make it neon instead that would be awesome in a concert!
Also I really like the 3D look of the art it really stood out and it made the whole thing more interesting. I would definitely use different object either a music box or just a large weird shape but that's if I used an object for this type of thing. I would also use colours going from dark to light and change the mood for the audience, like for each colour tone I would have the beat of the music for example really fast beaty music for the colourful tones then like have creepy music at the start when the colour is black/white.
I could even have a checker board shapes box with each square appearing in different colours. It would be cool I think this would be fun to do each of the ideas that I came up with I know I'll have fun with it.

The second artist that I'll be looking at is a company called Alcatel Lucent they did some video mapping stuff. I thought this one was good as well. In the video you see the square boxes, you also see the light shining on them. I really like the glowing light shining on it. This looks really cool especially when they used the glowing colour. You can also see the other glowing lines that have appeared on the squares with all the different colours they used.
Using variety of colours such as orange, purple, blue, red etc. This really made it look effective and this is such an amazing visual art, with the flow of colours and the squares are very eye catching!
I like how the inside of the squares started to change colour, that visual effect made it looks like a puzzle and almost like a game. The way the artist showed the colours of the squares inside and made it change to different colours and making the pace faster. It was just really cool.
I really like how the coloured squares clash together quickly to like form the out of space look. All the colours went together like tiny dots with all the blues, greens, pinks and yellows etc. I especially liked how the space effect thing started flowing around. After the colours started changing into different forms of circles, floating around and changing to other colours. That part looked space like it was a cool transformation effect you can tell that was the hardest part to make. Also the white circle when it dropped onto the box it started changing colours. The artist really took the time for the details of the colour and with the pace was a way for the artist to not let the viewer notice how they have done this.
You can also see that when the circle drops it lights up the squares into a blue colour which looked good. I like how the line from the planet dropped down lighting up the squares in to the colour green. The colour of the squares then has a glowing effect inside them, forming a checker board pattern inside them with different tones of greens. That was honestly one of my favourite parts of this video. I really like that it looked abstract when the colours changed.
I like the next thing that happens in the video where you have the yellow glowing swirly lines go across and between the squares. reminded me of when you see a fast time lapse of a high view of buildings with cars going past it kind of looked like that in the video. I think that's what the artist was going for. The glowing lines were really good after that bit came it made me like this video mapping better than the first one.
It was made by a video based mapping software, created by the Superbiern agency. The new media diversion from auditoire event agency helped with this aswell. The video mapping was created for Alcatel Lucent for his mobile world congress. The video installation was made with a video projection. Superbien agency actually came up with the idea of using software to create how it will look the visual elements of making it look 3D.
The software wrapping with quarts composer was how they made all the 3D and everything of the video mapping. They also used that to change the glowing effect on the box by turning the dial down a bit. This shows how he made the 3D video mapping and I think that's how most video installation artist do it.
The video installation (Envision step into the sensory box) their project plan was to utilize their art that they well thought out. From the technical visuals of their video mapping technology to their dynamic light shows. Their technology is also changing and currently been updated. It was created to give an experience showing what video mapping is, it was more like experimental for their mobile world congress. This was made to help organizations to communicate about a subject (marketing). Alcatel Lucent used this and what the company offered, as a way to test if what they do will work and from there the company expanded.

Then they used the 3D software to create the 3D animation for the changing colours and the visual parts. This was then projected onto real boxes to form the abstract piece of animation work. Then the company used high LED projectors with each mapping having a different set of animation. After that they projected into different surfaces to create this awesome video installation.
More about the company

How does it influence my ideas?
I really do like this it does kind of remind me of the first one because of the bright abstract colours, similar to this one. The difference is that Alcatel Lucent used square boxes which he used to animate on but Sonia Falcone used wooden slats of mirrors. The way the two artist use their colours are pretty much the same they both use a variety of different colours.
Both video artist made like a dance visual type of video mapping and it makes you feel like your in a night club. I like hardcore music so I would like to make something similar to both artist by using lots of different colours in a shape. The visual are great so it is hard to pick which one is best I think I would end up making something like second one. I would also like to have a wave like thing rather than buildings because it's more like me.
I do however admire Sonia's work more she did it on her own while the other one paired up with a company to do it. So I'm going to go with something like the second one as I like the techno and the space effect they did it was really cool.
